I’m in LUST with the Riverfront Park area, it’s a city dwellers dream. Steps from downtown, and in the other direction, steps from a river you can actually kayak on (if you do that sort of thing. I’m not much of a get-wet-unless-I’m-taking-a-shower kinda person). It’s the best of both worlds. For now, I’ll stick to what I know best – wine & dessert in the city.
al Lado, meaning “next to”, stands connected to Zengo, another one of Richard Sandoval’s fabulous restaurants. The newly opened tapas and wine bar, al Lado has blown me away in terms of interiors with it’s mountain, rustic, loungy vibe, and actually not what I would have expected in terms of desserts. They have carefully thought out their dessert menu and paired them to perfection with some of the most flavorful Late Harvest sweet wines I’ve ever experienced. Great, now I’ve got myself craving it again.
Though their three dessert offerings were all perfect, the dessert that has me stalking al Lado in my dreams is the Whipped Chocolate Ganache – Sherry and caramel, bastille style spiced almonds, extra virgin olive oil, fleur de sel, and crisp baguette tuilles. Paired with the Susana Balbo Malbec Late Harvest. Something about the combination of the chocolate ganache, olive oil, and salty baguette that satisfied my cravings for salty and sweet beautifully.
I’ll tell you this, their dessert and wine pairings are not spelled out on the menu, but they’re trained, just ask them for a recommendation – and trust them, it’ll be out of this world.
