How to Make the Best Stuffed Pancakes

Anyone can make standard pancakes, but only the most skillful and patient cooks can prepare stuffed pancakes. It is true that the process of preparing these pancakes is longer but the time you spend in the kitchen is totally worth it. Just imagine the combos you can create using this technique: Nutella-stuffed pancakes, Nutella-stuffed red velvet pancakes, peanut butter-stuffed vanilla pancakes… Get creative and take your breakfast to a whole new level of deliciousness.

In fact, preparing stuffed pancakes is not complicated at all. For starters, take your favorite pancake recipe. Here is mine, as seen on MyGreatRecipes – Check them out, they have a nice collection of pancakes!

Wet Ingredients

1 egg

1 ¼ cups milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

Dry Ingredients

1½ cups all-purpose flour

4 tbsp. sugar

3 tsp baking powder

Plus Nutella cream for the stuffing.

Make Frozen Nutella Discs

  1. Line a baking pan with parchment paper or a foil.
  2. Place 2 tablespoons of Nutella onto the baking pan and use the spoon to form discs (each disk should be about 2½ in. in diameter). This recipe produces about 12-14 flapjacks give or take, so you will need 6-7 Nutella discs.
  3. Place the baking pan in the freezer until for about an hour, until the discs are firm.

Tip: Don’t take the discs out of the freezer until you are ready to use them because they melt quickly.

Prepare the Batter

Place the dry ingredients in a large bowl and whisk to combine. Add the wet ingredients and keep whisking until combined, leaving a few lumps behind.

Prep the Frying Pan

Prepare a frying pan (griddle or skillet). Melt one teaspoon of butter in it, then use a paper towel or a napkin to remove the excess butter (this is to prevent burn spots on the flapjacks). You can also use oil or nonstick spray.

Cook the Pancakes

Pour ¼ cup of batter onto the frying pan, followed immediately by a frozen Nutella disc. Top with some more batter, enough to cover the disk in the middle.

When the edges start to bubble up, it’s time to flip. Check if the bottom side is golden brown before you turn the pancake. Cook for one more minute, until the other side is also golden brown. Repeat with the remaining batter.

Add Toppings

I think that this combo does not need anything else, it is a pure perfection. The Nutella discs will melt during cooking which is quite enough for me. However, if you feel extra decadent, choose fresh halved strawberries or any other fresh fruit slices, whipped cream, or anything you like.

Extra tip: If you don’t eat the whole stack at once (which I think is impossible to happen, but still…), keep the hotcakes warm in the oven set to the lowest temperature. This way the stuffing will be soft and melty and ready to be revisited any time of day or night!
