Sugar Loco gets creative with Duff Goldman {Los Angeles}

Have you ever been in the presence of a child, whether it be your own, your niece/nephew or even just a child across the room, and actually witness the pure innocence and sense of accomplishment when they’ve created something all on their own. It’s usually the same few steps for each child. (1) The concentration that consumes every ounce of their body, from the specific choices in material to the tongue slightly sticking out the left side of their mouth. (2) The moment they take to stand back and look at their creation and finally (3) The joy of accomplishment and anticipation in wanting to see how proud you are of them as they show off their one-of-a-kind masterpiece {at least in their eyes}.

This my friend is the same joy Chef Duff Goldman wanted to capture in all of his guests as they share in the fun at Duff’s Cake Mix in West Hollywood, CA.

I had the privilege of meeting Duff and his team of extremely talented individuals as I toured Duff’s Cake Mix and Charm City Cakes West (which by the way, so totally awesome that they’ve opened it up for everyone to view their brilliant works of art!). As Duff and I enjoyed the afternoon chatting it up about everything from his passions in food to “why the heck there are so many donut shops in LA” I had the opportunity to take just a glimpse into the life of Duff and to realize the kid-like enthusiasm and passion that is lit within him.

At Duff’s Cake Mix its all about fun and using your creative mind. They have a team of helpers there to guide you along the process of decorating your cake, from rolling out fondant to choosing the right color of sprinkles to take your idea and turn it into a reality.

While I was there, this adorable little wide-eyed girl glanced through the windows into Charm City Cakes West near where Duff and I were sitting. She then turned to Duff and said, “When I get older and get married, I’m going to have a beautiful cake just like one of those.” Duff proceeded to ask, “Will you be coming here to order it?” and the little girl said, “Yep”. Then Duff asked her, “Do you know that I made those cakes in there?” The little girl literally took a moment to look Duff up and down and then said, “Really? Well you did a pretty good job.”

Both of us laughing, she went on back to her table to dream about her wedding and decorate her own personal cake of her own!

I am absolutely in love with the concept behind Duff’s Cake Mix. They have taken an experience that some kids {or even adults} may have never had the opportunity of doing and provided it to everyone to enjoy. Oh and did I mention the cake tastes amazing too? Heck – while the kiddos are decorating their cakes, grab a slice of one of their signature flavors to enjoy while snapping a few photos and helping your little one decide whether pink sprinkles or purple confetti will help to beautify their cake.

But Duff’s Cake Mix is not just for the little ones as I continuously mention, its for kids of all ages – seriously! Before we even started creating our Sugar Loco inspired cake I was already thinking what a fun way to start off a bachelorette weekend of festivities or as Duff mentioned, a great activity for a bridal party to do before rehearsal and be able to take all the cakes to the rehearsal dinner! So FUN!

My time with Duff flew by all too fast, which literally fit in with the saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” I’m already thinking that Duff’s Cake Mix needs to come to every Sugar Loco Writer’s City to enjoy.

Extremely fun. Great Afternoon. And delicious cake to top it off.

Stop in to Duff’s Cake Mix, ask about the glass air-brush station {it’s Duff’s Favorite}, and tell them Sugar Loco sent you!

**Disclaimer: Photo’s in which I am featured were taken by the one and only – totally famous photographer – Duff Goldman. All credits should be directed his way. Thanks Duff!

    Your article was like being there with you. I’m a foodie and watch Duff on the Food Network; but it would be like a dream come true for ME to stand where you were! Do the cakes taste as incredible as they look?
