Goddess and Grocer is a favorite Chicago cafe, selling a variety of local artisanal food products and freshly made food. With three locations around town and a fourth coming soon, you’re sure to see them around. Most of their desserts are made in house although they do sell sweet treats for other local brands. Of the several desserts I tried, a couple of seasonal flavors most impressed me.
Brownie bars are a staple at Goddess, although Pastry Chef Alysha Boze likes to add extra ingredients from time to time. I was lucky enough to try her monthly special, a raspberry brownie bar studded with white and dark chocolate chips. The brownie bar is so fudgy and intensely chocolatey, you’ll never be satisfied with brownies from a cake mix again. It’s almost like eating straight ganache!
While Boze’s brownies change on a monthly basis, she also has a weekly special cupcake. This week features a strawberry chocolate kiss cupcake that is a riff on a Neapolitan, with strawberry and chocolate cake swirled together like a marble cake. The cupcake is topped with vanilla buttercream, sprinkles, and a fresh strawberry. The marbled cake was not only pretty, but quite moist too. I’ve tried hundreds of cupcake flavors before, but never anything like this. I normally love filled cupcakes, but while this one wasn’t filled, the combination of flavors worked really well nevertheless.
