Forget everything you think you know about waffles. These are not the floppy, doughy breakfast food you would drown in butter and syrup; they are thin, crispy and not at all sweet. Think of them more as the perfectly baked platform on which to serve up an amazing assortment of tastes.
Last week I was treated to a smorgasbord of tastes at Bruxie Gourmet Waffle Sandwiches. I was joined by Jellybean Julie and her two adorable under-5 year olds. We passed around sips of the Old Fashioned Cane Sugar sodas while vying with the kids for our fair share of the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffle sandwich (we ended up ordering a second). The sodas were great and I was particularly taken with the vanilla cream and the spiced cola. The chicken was cooked to perfection – tender, juicy and complemented nicely by the chili honey and cider slaw.
The kids must have been entertaining themselves because when the Crème Brulee waffle arrived at our table, Julie and I were sucked into a vortex of crisp caramelized sugar, creamy custard and fresh berries wrapped in a golden waffle shell, from which we did not return for several moments. We sat like devotees before a icon, eyes shut, muttering “oh my god, oh my god, oh my god,” until we were snapped back into the here and now by the arrival of the equally delightful Lemon Cream and Berries waffle, incidentally, owner Dean Simon’s personal favorite. Light, tangy, fresh and creamy, this dessert is ideal for summer.
What could sides and add-ons really have to contribute to a meal already this delicious? More indulgence. Complete and total savory/sweet indulgence. Try the waffle fries. The crisp, golden, salty tic-tac-toe boards, are great by themselves, or in a dish smothered in gravy and cheese curds called poutine if you want to really go for it. Still have room afterwards? Why not finish up with a Belgian chocolate shake or a Creamsicle float?

PS – we did devour these treats for free, but only write about our favorite things – this is our opinion!
