Fall TV Premiere Cocktails pt. 4 – The First Love Affair!

For our penultimate Fall TV Premiere Cocktail, we have a delicious potion that’s been concocted for Once Upon a Time.  Rumplestiltskin will try to claim that it’s his recipe, but any fan of the show can tell you he’s not to be trusted. By the way, you can DEFINITELY count us amongst that group. The nice thing about getting soooo many of these drink recipes is that we get to pick our favorites!

Once Upon a Time is our change of pace show. We normally stick with the type of mystery shows that are grounded in reality – probably a product of feeling let down in the explanations category by LOST. So getting into a fairy tale/”real world” crossover was a reach for us. We were, however, intrigued by the idea of putting characters we grew up with into the world that we live in now, so we decided to give it a try. And we love it! The “real world” is present enough that it’s not simply a fairy tale transplanted into modern times. The characters have great depth, especially in Season 2 when (SPOILER ALERT!) they regain their past memories and struggle with their new dual identities(/SPOILER). It adds a different flavor to our TV viewing lineup while still letting us be comfortable with the level of fantasy.

Side note –  Storybrooke, Maine has definitely vaulted itself to #2 on our list of favorite fictional towns in Maine, right after Cabot Cove. The fairy tale characters and memory loss issues would make life more interesting, but like Scooby and the Gang we feel safer if any mysteries are solved in a non-paranormal fashion. Plus, who wouldn’t want to go fishing with Jessica Fletcher? She’s the original cool but still classy grandma. And as she taught us, it’s rude as a host to keep people waiting, so here’s your recipe!

The First Love Affair

2 oz. Broker’s Gin
4-5 large muddled mint leaves
¾ oz. fresh squeezed lemon juice
½ oz. B.G. Reynolds orgeat syrup
1 egg white
1 large mint spring for garnish

Gently muddle 4-5 good-sized mint leaves in a pint glass. Add the rest of the liquid ingredients. Give a
very hard dry shake (without ice) for about 25 seconds or so. Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously
for another 10-12 seconds. Double strain the cocktail with a fine mesh strainer into a coup glass and
garnish with a healthy mint sprig.
