Living the Sweet Life at Sweets Bakeshop

Sweets Bakeshop has two Twin Cities locations and I recently got to sit down with Krista, the pastry chef, of this delectable duo.  Krista and her business partner Ly have quickly become known as the place to get cupcakes in the Twin Cities.  Sweets Bakeshop recently whipped the competition, and won a cake decorating award at the Minnesota Monthly Food & Wine Show.

Krista is the first one to give credit to Ly for her impeccable decorating skills.  Krista loves to build cupcakes and macarons while Ly likes to decorate custom cakes, so the two make a most delightful pair!  They met by chance while each was chasing their respective endeavors and that’s when they decided they would make a good team. Voila…Sweets Bakeshop!

Krista loved baking as a young girl and was inspired by her grandmother.  It wasn’t until she was deployed to Kosovo and Iraq that she decided she would follow her passions when she returned home.  Krista loves to find unique flavors for the cupcakes and macarons.  Her favorites are Kettle Corn (mine to0, be sure to get the large cupcake!) and Salted Caramel.  The customer favorite is Triple Chocolate with the newer (introduced November 2010) Salted Caramel flavor quickly rising the ranks.

The second Sweets Bakeshop location opened this year in Minneapolis.  This location has a great seating area for casual meetings, or treating your little one to a cupcake date.  Oh, and we must discuss the French Macarons!  I honestly don’t think I have one particular favorite because I haven’t tried them all…yet.  Believe me, I WILL try them all.  Macarons can be neatly boxed and make the best on-the-go gift when you are heading to a party.

Something unique about Sweets Bakeshop is that they use all local ingredients, besides the rarities, a lot of the same local family farms that Butter Bakery Cafe uses.  As for the future, Sweets Bakeshop hopes to continue to expand!  Besides their own shops, you can also find sweets from Sweets at Brasa in St. Paul, Modern Cafe & Groundswell Coffee.  They also want to grow their wedding business – make sure I’m on the guest list if your wedding cake is from Sweets!
