Lofty Pursuits – “Olde Tyme” Candy That Is Truly One Of A Kind!

I adore anything vintage. There’s something about the quality, care and handmade look and feel of things that were crafted before the age of mass production. So imagine how excited I was to get a shipment from Lofty Pursuits.

Lofty Pursuits is an ice cream shop and toy store located in Tallahassee, Florida. It is also one of only a handful of stores that still makes old fashioned hand-folded candy. In the center of the store is a candy-cooling table dating from the 1881, where master candymaker Wes Raley works his magic.

Wes makes all kinds of candy, from drop candy to classic spiral lollipops. But his specialty is “image candy”. The images are made by making large logs of hot sugar with one large image assembled throughout the log. The log is then pulled without distorting the image so that a small version of the art is visible in each bite. The image can represent the flavor of the candy, a company logo, or even a person’s initials.

My personal favorite was the root beer – if you hold it to the light you can see light pass through the glass mug in the image. Okay, I loved the pomegranate too, with each seed depicted in the candy.

You may also be interested in their Kickstarter campaign – they want to restore 19 pairs of Victorian candy rollers from the 1840’s. The goal is to use them to make candy, rather than have them wind up in the hands of a private collector or on display in a museum. For more information, check out their Kickstarter page here.
