Mango Black Tea Creme Brulee {Recipe}

I was asked by World Market to head into my local store and do some shopping from their new Life of Pi pop up shop.  Um, took me all of 1/2 second to respond {I know, playing hard to get}.  I love me some World Market international finds.  Especially their specialty shops.  I had hit the jackpot, and I knew it.

Life of Pi is the story of an Indian boy named Pi, a zookeeper’s son, who survives a
disaster at sea and is thrown into an epic journey. While adrift in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with another a
fearsome Bengal tiger. The movie opens in theaters November 21, 2012. You can watch the trailer for Life of Pi here: http://www.lifeofpimovie.com/#!/watch-trailer

As I had a smile a mile wide, I shopped eagerly among all of the unique items like gorgeous scarfs, ankle jewelry that jingles, Bindi’s, and my favorite the hammered silver bowls.

I had to remember I was on a mission.  A mission to become inspired by the new Life of Pi shop to create a fabulous Indian inspired dessert, using the Life of Pi products.  This one instantly caught my eye….  You wouldn’t normally think about Mango Black Tea as being the main ingredient for dessert, maybe served with dessert, but I had grand plans for this little canister of yum.

Who ever thought this can of tea could be turned into something as yummy as Mango Black Tea Creme Brulee??  Drooling yet?  I think I’ve found a new favorite dessert.  And feeling so ethnic eating it too.    Pick that tea can up in the store and give it a good sniff,  it smells like the most heavenly black tea ever.

Mix the fruity tea into a milky custard, add the pleasant surprise of fresh mango at the bottom of each little cup, and top with a caramelized cinnamon sugar crisp.  Oh LORDY!   You know what makes things taste even better? Adorable serving dishes and tableware too.  Everything you see in my pics are from World Market.  If you’re super jelly, you can go get some of your own, there is enough for everyone.  #swearsies

Life of Pi inspired Mango Black Tea Creme Brulee

2 C Whipping Cream

4 Life of Pi Mango Black Tea Bags

2 Mangos – pureed

5 egg yolks

1 whole egg

Pinch of cinnamon

2 T brown sugar

cinnamon & white sugar mix for brulee’d tops – approx 1 1/2 Tablespoons

6 ramekins, or single serving oven safe baking dishes

Cut up mango and puree in a food processor or blender, set aside.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.

Heat the cream in a heavy bottom pan, until almost boiling.  Remove from burner and drop the tea bags into the cream, cover to steep for only 4 minutes (no longer, or it may become bitter).  Squeeze the excess cream out of the tea bags back into the cream and stir together.

While tea is steeping, crack yolks and whole egg, into a bowl.  Whisk until well mixed (no longer stringy).  Add the brown sugar and pinch of cinnamon, and whisk until fully combined.  Slowly add the tea/cream mixture into the sugar/yolk bowl.  Whisking together slowly.

Place ramekins in a shallow baking dish (one that can be filled with water, half way up the side of the ramekins).  Spoon mango puree evenly into the bottom of each ramekin, and then evenly divide the cream mixture between each of the cups.  Fill the baking pan (not the ramekins) only half way with water.

Place backing dish with filled ramekins into the oven for 30 minutes.  You’ll know they’re ready because they will be set, but jiggly.  Chill the custards on a cooling rack for 30 minutes and then cover and put in the refrigerator for 2-4 hours (or even overnight).

When ready to serve generously sprinkle cinnamon/sugar mixture on top of each custard and place in the oven under the broiler for a few minutes.  Watching them closely to make sure they don’t burn.  When sugar is caramelized on top, they’re done.  Serve immediately.
