As of July 18, Chef Nathaniel Felder, formerly of Manhattan hot spots Catch and Lavo, is now the head chef of The Astor Room . He has created a new menu that features an inventive twist on traditional American cuisine, and a signature cocktail list that pays homage to the dining room’s cinematic heritage.
The signature cocktails are designed to evoke the feelings and arouse the sensibilities to what it was like to be Gloria Swanson or Claudette Colbert dining here.
The Astor Room, located at the Kaufman Astoria Studios Gate at 35th Avenue and 36th Street, has reinvented itself in the newly renovated space that was once the commissary for Paramount Pictures when it owned the studio in the 1920’s. Kaufman Astoria Studios opened the new Astor Room in July of this year and, in addition to bringing in Chef Felder, has renovated the restaurant back to its original glory days, and expanded the restaurant to include a new outdoor dining area within the studio’s backlot.
The outdoor area is secluded from the street by the iconic Kaufman Astoria Studio gate, and is enclosed by a wall of planted palms and colored lights under five oversized cantilever umbrellas, creating an intimate oasis of retro glam. The outdoor space as well as the main dining room features music Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays .
For when the weather gets cooler, or you just don’t feel like eating outside, the original dining room offers a cozy atmosphere for after work drinks or a dinner date. It retains the original tiled walls that existed when it was the Paramount Pictures commissary, as evidenced by an old photo that hangs on the far wall. It shows Rudolph Valentino, still dressed in period costume from shooting Monsieur Beaucaire, dining with the cast, his wife, and studio executives. It’s these old-school cool touches combined with their innovative new menu that make this restaurant a must-visit!
