{Recipe} Sandra Lee’s Dark Chocolate Caramel Slices

This is the recipe my two hands whipped up for our local Share our Strength Bake Sale, and true to Sandra’s philosophy of keeping things simple – she nailed it again (and for a moment, I felt like a real baker).

She’s the sweetest for letting us share this recipe from her Bake Sale book with our dearest friends.  Enjoy!

Dark Chocolate Caramel Slices

 

Prep 20 minutes Bake 10 minutes

Cool 10 minutes + 1 hour Chill 1 hour Oven 375°F

Makes 16 servings

Nonstick cooking spray

1 pouch (17.5 ounces) sugar cookie mix, Betty Crocker®

1?2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted

50 individual caramel candies, unwrapped, Kraft®

1 tablespoon water

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips, Nestle®

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together cookie mix and melted butter until mixture comes together. Press into bottom of prepared baking pan.
  3. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until set in center. Cool in pan on a wire rack.
  4. In a medium saucepan, combine caramels and water over medium-high heat, stirring constantly until smooth. Pour over cookie crust; cool completely.
  5. Place chocolate chips in a small microwave-safe bowl; microwave on medium 2 minutes or until melted, stirring every 30 seconds. Spread over caramel layer. Chill in refrigerator about 1 hour or until chocolate hardens.*
  6. *Note: Remove from refrigerator after 1 hour, before caramel slices become too hard to slice.
