Jax Fish House Enchants and Entices Seafood and Dessert Lovers Alike
Again I found myself, one lovely winter afternoon, invited to an oceanside sugar splurge. If any of you follow SugarLoco regularly, you know that oceanside and my Rocky Mountain home don’t correlate. However, the thoughtful brand Big Red F, behind Jax Fish House and Oyster Bar in Colorado, boasts four locations of fresh coastal offerings, and apparently enviable desserts.
Let’s dive right in, pun intended. After I polished off fresh- shucked oysters, and other incredible seafood fare, we started with the Jax Sundae. This sundae’s a dream come true. A delicate chocolate brownie is topped with creamy oreo ice cream, then covered with chocolate chip cookies, pound cake croutons and pretzels. The best part of this is the homemade sprinkles. Seriously, the sprinkles are made in-house! My other indulgence of choice was the PB&J donut holes, filled with seasoned preserves and accessorized with peanut butter crunch. This wonderful fall day served up a delicate pear preserve that complimented the flash-fry of the dough perfectly.
All desserts and breads in Jax Fishhouse and Oyster Bar are spearheaded by pastry chef Jennifer Helmore Lewis. Not only does she bake all the sweets in house, but creates the split-top rolls, the brioche buns for Jax’ burgers, the biscuits served at Sunday’s brunch, and we cannot fail to mention, the bread served at the table! You can truly taste the difference in Jennifer’s baking. She handcrafts every dessert and bread to perfection.
While we could’ve made it to brunch on Sunday, I was so full, a four day nap sounded delightful. However, my lunch date, Nicole Felitti, recommended the lemon curd pancakes on the weekend brunch menu, served with maple butter, strawberries, and lemon-thyme syrup. She also recommended pairing Jax’s flourless chocolate cake as well as an Old Fashioned muddled with an orange. “It was simply a perfect combo,” she noted. And this girl knows good food. Her family has been in the food business for generations. Currently her family owns an authentic, healthy, catering business. As a sugar snob, I recommend Jax’ newest location in Glendale, Colorado and their unbelievable rooftop patio with a little bubbly and seasonal sorbet and PB&J donut holes. Visit 650 S.
