The Sugar Loco Sweet 16 :: Top Sweets & Desserts from 2011

Happy Birthday to us, Happy Birthday to us!  Happy Birthday dear, Sugar Locoooooo!  Happy Birthday to us!  Now someone get us a BIG slice of cake (extra buttercream, please) to celebrate.

I swear we’ve been lost on a sugar rush through this whirlwind, because somehow an entire YEAR has passed us by before we could even say “candy”.  We’re thrilled to release our 1st ANNUAL “Sweet 16” list.  It’s our compilation of our MUST have dessert hot spots, desserts in stores, online and through recipes.  If you do anything in this glorious new year, we expect you to knock off at least 10, if not all, of these babies. These are our all time favorite flavors for the past year – trust us, we’ve got pretty rockin’ tasters.

And the awards go to……………. {in no particular order}

Los Angeles

1} Sweets for the Soul Bakery  Brownie Shots
Alana coins these Brownie Shots as unforgettable in fact, her Soul was Singing after biting into the Billionaire Bliss Brownie Shot.  Chocolate & Salt, need we say more?

2} LingerPeanut Butter & Jelly Cup

You know it’s a fantastic dessert when it leaves you wishing you could finish off every day with this chocolate bowl filled with peanut butter buttercream.  As if they could have stopped there, they plated it up with brulee’d bananas and a Cabernet Jelly Coulis.  Knocks my socks off.

3} Vail CascadeAtwater at Gore Creek Restaurant’s Dessert & Beer pairing

Newly launching this month, I still have goosebumps from this tasting, namely the White Chocolate Cheesecake paired with the Unibroue La Fin du Monde.  That combination of white chocolate and toasted coconut after a swig of beer surprised my taste buds with a burst of lemon.  I’m a giddy little girl (at legal drinking age, of course).

Minneapolis/St. Paul

4} Sweets Bakeshop – Gourmet Cupcakes & MacaronsSweets Bakeshop Minneapolis Minnesota

Which do I love more their cupcakes or macarons…that’s like asking which child I love more.  I’ll take one of each {flavor}, please.

5} Heidi’s Minneapolis Nitro Mousse Heidi's Minneapolis Dessert

Heidi’s Nitro Mousse is really delicious, and really fun to eat.  I may or may not dream of this dessert.

6} Doughnut Plant Creme Brulee DoughnutOur contributing writer, Sheri, says that you MUST try the Creme Brulee Doughnut.  Can you imagine biting into that signature toasty sugar?  Oh heaven, come get me.

In stores and Online

7} Talenti Gelato – Sea Salt CaramelTalenti Gelato

I actually sat (in bed) in denial, of my container being empty.  I continued sniffing the container trying to trick my taste buds from thinking our affair was not yet over.  I kid you not.

8} Edible Gifts Plus – Chip-Zel-Pop  chip-zel-pop sugar loco

I’m gonna just say it…This is a PMS’ers best friend.  Salty, Sweet, Chocolate insanity in a can.  Worth every penny…monthly.

9} Sweet Sally’s – Raspberry BarsSweet Sallys Raspberry Bars

Sweet Sally’s bars are just like you remember eating from your grandma’s kitchen.  The MOST amazing “dessert comfort food” you will ever try. Ever.

10} Coco-Zen – Truffles

From the packaging to the decadent chocolate, everything about Coco-Zen is intentional.  An indulgence you can feel good about.

11} Madyson’s Marshmallows – Gourmet Marshmallowsmadysons gourmet marshmallows

We adore the sweet story behind this brand as much as we adore their unique marshmallow combinations.  If you have yet to try gourmet marshmallows {no, the “bagged” kind from the gorcery store don’t count!} I would highly recommend you taste these for yourself.

12} Hammond’s Candies – Chocolate Pretzelshammonds gourmet chocolate pretzels

Nothing fancy, but these pretzels are incredibly addictive and just the perfect amount of “sweet” chocolate.  Even better…dip them in chocolate!

13} The Sweetest Thing – Chocolate Sugar Cookies

Not your typical sugar cookie, these chocolate sugar cookies stood out from the crowd.  Beautifully decorated and packaged with care, TST cookies are the perfect compliment to your next party.

14} Ciao Bella – Peach Ginger Margaritaciao bella peach ginger margarita recipeHad to work a quick change and improvise on this recipe by adding Skinny Girl Margarita, I thought I had died and gone to Mexican heaven.  Ciao Bella adds two flavors of their gourmet sorbets into this bonita, you’ll be drinking and singing la cucaracha all night long.

15} Sandra Lee – Dark Chocolate Caramel Squares

I have never seen an item go so fast at a barbeque before.  I swear I saw seconds, thirds and 20ths.  They have the same flavor combination as a Twix bar, except better, because Twix doesn’t add love 🙂

16} Pink Kiss CookiesPink Kisses Cookies

I am not normally a fan of cherry, but I absolutely love these cookies!  Be careful not to overcook them though.

Thank you so much for including us in your top 16 and for all the coverage and support you’ve given us. We’re honored to be included and we love what you’re doing for everyone in the dessert industry!

P.S. Noticed a small typo in our name — there’s no apostrophe in “Sweets Bakeshop”. 🙂

I still think about my encounter with Chip-Zel-Pop from time to time. Sigh.

I wish I wasn’t allergic to cherries because those pink cookies look amazing and perfect for Valentine’s Day. It looks like I could swap cherries for strawberries.

I’ve been wanting to eat at Linger since summer, when I saw those gorgeous open windows up the hill from Little Man. What views. It’s still on my list.

Yikes, these desserts make me want to travel!!! Thankfully, you added the “In Stores and online” category, or I’d be forced into a road trip.
